Overview

What is it?

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), also known as photobiomodulation therapy, is a non-invasive treatment that uses low-intensity red or near-infrared light to stimulate cellular activity and promote tissue repair and regeneration. It is not naturally occurring but is a therapeutic technique developed for medical and cosmetic purposes.

How does it work?

LLLT works by delivering light energy to the scalp, which is absorbed by cells in the hair follicles. This process, called photobiomodulation, enhances mitochondrial activity, increases ATP production, and reduces oxidative stress. These effects stimulate dormant hair follicles, shifting them from the resting (telogen) phase to the active growth (anagen) phase, promoting hair regrowth .

What are the benefits?

LLLT has been shown to stimulate hair growth in both men and women with conditions like androgenetic alopecia (AGA), alopecia areata (AA), and even chemotherapy-induced hair loss. It is safe, non-invasive, and effective, with studies reporting increased hair density, improved hair regrowth, and high patient satisfaction .

What does the research say?

Research supports the use of LLLT for hair loss. Clinical trials have demonstrated significant increases in hair density and hair count. For example, one study showed a 12-17% increase in hair count after 26 weeks of treatment with LLLT devices. Another study found that LLLT combined with minoxidil was more effective than either treatment alone .

Minimal

Scalp tenderness

Some users may experience mild tenderness or discomfort on the scalp during or after treatment.

Temporary hair shedding (telogen effluvium)

In the first 1-2 months of treatment, temporary hair shedding may occur as hair follicles transition to the growth phase.

Mild urticaria (hives)

Rarely, some individuals may develop mild hives or skin irritation.

Paresthesia (tingling sensation)
