Overview
What is it?
Topical erythromycin and zinc is a combination treatment used for acne vulgaris. Erythromycin is an antibiotic, while zinc is a naturally occurring mineral with anti-inflammatory properties. Together, they work to reduce acne by targeting bacteria and inflammation.
How does it work?
Topical erythromycin works by inhibiting the growth of *Propionibacterium acnes*, a bacterium that contributes to acne. Zinc, on the other hand, has anti-inflammatory effects that help reduce redness and swelling associated with acne lesions. The combination of these two ingredients helps to both treat and prevent acne breakouts .
What are the benefits?
The combination of topical erythromycin and zinc is effective in reducing both inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions. Studies have shown that it can significantly reduce the number of acne-causing bacteria and decrease the severity of acne over time. It is also considered a safe option for many individuals, including pregnant women, when used as directed .
Effectiveness
What does the research say?
Research indicates that topical erythromycin and zinc can significantly reduce acne lesions. In one study, a 4% erythromycin/1.2% zinc acetate solution reduced *Propionibacterium acnes* by 98% after 10 weeks of use. Additionally, inflammatory lesions decreased by 69% in the treatment group compared to only 9% in the control group . Another study found that this combination was more effective than minocycline, a common oral antibiotic for acne .
Side Effects

Some users may experience mild skin irritation, such as itching or discomfort at the application site .
Dryness
Dryness of the skin is a common side effect, especially in the initial stages of treatment .
Redness
